I just moved here a year and a half ago and now I am being transferred. If you are looking to move here from outside of the area really do your homework on what sort of home it is that you want. Otherwise, you could be stuck with a place that you will not be happy with.



I looked at over 40 homes before I purchased this one...I really did my homework.



Things that just must be in order for you to be satisfied:



1. First of all the roof age/condition (mine original slate from 1917 in great condition) without this you cannot live in the house.



2. Gutters: this helps to keep your basement from flooding

3. Basement: check to see if there are any signs of flooding or water damage; from here one can view many things such as plumbing, wiring, furnace, insulation ect..

4. Windows-many Lakewood homes have the old style single pane windows...this is no good for energy efficiency and just basic functionality-double pane windows throughout can cost $10-20,000. Upgraded central heat/AC is useless without upgraded windows one may as well just heat the entire outdoors.


5.Type of heat and A/C; of course central is preferred.


6. Garage-is there one and in what condition? the door? the roof? will your car fit? does it have a window to let in sunlight? My garage is brand new and is lined with peg board to hang tools; has nice shelving as well.



7. Glass block windows in the basement-great for light and privacy and security and ventillation to keep basement from getting musty.



8. Type of siding-do you want to paint wood all summer? Vinyl of course is very low maintantence.


9. Kitchen/appliances/cabinets-one could spend K$$$ on this-mine has black granite countertops with new white Kraft Made cabinets with stainless steel fridge/gas stove/micorwave with matching stainless steel mini blinds at window over sink-(sink has fancy moen faucet and soap dispenser)has a nice eating area in kitchen with black and white tile floor. Insinkerator garbage disposal!!!!!(Dude, no Way!)



10. Window Coverings-I have custom made wooden blinds in dinning room and other custom blinds throughout the house-I paid like $1,500 for this.



11. Fireplace: is there one or is there just a hole in the wall where a fireplace once was? Mine, totally rebuilt surrounded by ceramic tile, gas with wooden mantle- ceramic tile hearth; great for those long, dreary, cold, days and nights. Heat does not escape to outside unlike old version gas fireplaces.
